St Charles, Missouri

It’s taken us the better part of two weeks, but we finally found a fantastic downtown (one of the things that Sandy has been searching for).  One of the constant themes of the trip has been Hawkeye’s ability to pick out the great destinations (whereas mine have been things like the Creation Museum and Holcomb, Kansas), and this was ni different.  St Charles is located right on the banks of the Missouri River, and has managed to avoid the corruption of the encroaching casinos and remain charming.  We had dinner at the Mother-In-Law House Restaurant, and it was easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had.  Sandy had the flounder and I had the cordon bleu.  We ate outside and a lovely breeze was blowing up off the Missouri River.  Afterwards we went to the Trailhead Brewery, which is a great local brewery.  The bartender actually said, “welcome to America.”  Extraordinary town, and we’re planning on heading back down to the historic downtown for breakfast in the morning.
