Hooker, Oklahoma

Shortly after leaving Liberal, Kansas we made our way across the border to Hooker, Oklahoma.  A waitress at the Branding Iron the night before was from Hooker and suggested that we stop by the Chamber of Commerce and t-shirt shop (same building and enterprise).  The town itself is a very dusty and desolate place (think Last Picture Show) that seems to survive mainly by selling souvenirs that take advantage of its “naughty” name – for example, a t-shirt that says “Hooker OK”.  And, yes, several of my friends will be the proud owner of one soon.  Allegedly the town is named after an illustrious early inhabitant who was an excellent roper or “hooker”; Sandy and I have our own theories.  If you look behind Sandy in the picture you can see an ongoing meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, which had to take a break when I asked if they had one of the shirts (Hooker Horny Toads baseball team) in large.
